How detection actually works

Most detection comes down to your IP address and what can be inferred from it. Every connection you make carries one, and an IP maps to a rough location and, crucially, to a reputation.

Corporate tools check that reputation constantly. A login from the coffee shop down the road looks normal. A login from a data center IP range in another country, at three in the morning local time, does not. Add impossible travel checks, where a login from two distant places within an hour trips an alarm, and the pattern is easy to catch.

None of this needs spyware on your laptop. It falls out of ordinary security logging that most companies turn on by default.

The instinct is to hide behind a commercial VPN. The problem is that VPN apps hand you an address from a shared data center range, and those ranges are some of the most flagged addresses on the internet.

So instead of looking like a person at home, you now look like traffic from a server farm, which is exactly the profile fraud and security systems are tuned to notice. You have not removed the signal. You have replaced it with a louder one.
